ACTIVISM
HUGGING TREES or saving species has never been easier,
thanks to Alberta naturalist Stephen Legault. For the past
year. Legault and his Internet-based green coalition at
wildcanada.net have been on a mission to deliver
up-to-the-minute conservation information to Canadians. He
aims to make it easy for even the busiest people to find time
to voice their concerns.
The website's Action Centres allow concerned nature lovers
to sign up for free and, with a click of the mouse, fax
pre-written letters to their MP or MLA. "There's no question
were playing this game in a way that it's never been played
before in Canada," says Legault.
Wildcanada.net focuses on issues related to
wildlife and wildlands, such as current lobbying for
endangered-species protection and conservation of wildlife
habitat in mountain foothills.
"Raising awareness about these issues is part of the
democratic process," says Legault, who expects his e-activist
network to grow from 3,000 to 30,000 by the end of 2004. "We
want to make it easy for Canadians to tell their elected
leaders what they think of their performance." |
